ID thief steals from gym parking lots
At least four Guilford County, North Carolina, women recently became victims of identity theft after their purses were stolen from their cars in gym parking lots, WGHP-TV reports.
The thefts, which took place at facilities such as Planet Fitness and The Club gym, resulted in at least $10,000 worth of fraudulent checks, some of which were written in the names of the victims. Specifically, Planet Fitness victim Trinh Nguyen and The Club target Tara Mitchell had checks cashed for amounts of either $1,900 or $1,750. Mitchell told the news source that the suspects "have gone to three different branches of my bank using my driver's license disguised as me, oddly enough." Police have released a photo of a woman suspected of performing the fake ID authentication, although it's unknown if more than one person is involved in the scheme. A similar story was reported earlier this month by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Two men and a woman opened locked cars in local gym parking lots to steal credit cards, which they used to purchase iPads.
