Public records websites help debt collectors, but there are limits
Debt collection firms face a variety of challenges when it comes to tracking down individuals who may be delinquent for non-payment. A number of websites offering access to public records or individuals' contact information are easily retrievable on the internet. Those who Google search their own name may find an entry for themselves. A new website has even sprung up that offers access to court records, which may be helpful for collectors who have run out of options.
However, there are limits to the functionality of these websites for collectors. On one hand, these databases are often user-friendly and can produce a variety of results. Some even show several different addresses or states that individuals may have lived in. At the same time, some of this information may be out of date and less reliable than consumer credit reports. Debt recovery agencies may want to subscribe to several choice sites for personal data and legal records. At the same time, more innovative methods may be necessary when it comes to tracking down individuals who seem to have disappeared. Collectors should be familiar with federal laws and remain compliant with regulations regarding consumer privacy. A variety of tools for locating delinquent account holders may be necessary for collectors' success.
