Regardless of the controversial aspects of background screening, more companies are leaning toward the approach when managing their staff to increase security measures.


The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducts the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which aims to save lives and protect people from harmful situations, according to the organization's website.

Hoping to upgrade their current screening process, attorneys in Kentucky are supporting a bill that would require the background screening of all nursing home employees.

Attorney J. Marshall Hughes, who has served on the Kentucky Bar Association's ethics and office management committees, stated the bill will further ensure the protection of the elderly.

"Any employee - not just those who provide direct care for nursing home residents - still has many opportunities to exploit them just because they are in such close proximity," he said. "And because the digital fingerprints will be sent to both state police and the FBI for criminal background checks, the screening process will be more comprehensive and will hopefully lessen instances of elder abuse."

The Kentucky legislature will make a decision on the proposed bill in 2012.
